Sea temperature and wetsuit guide

Air temperature can feel comfortable while the sea remains cold. Plan for the water—not just the weather on shore.

Quick answerThere is no single wetsuit rule that suits every person. Water temperature, air temperature, wind, time immersed, experience, activity and individual response all matter. The RNLI warns that water below 15°C can seriously affect breathing and movement.

Why sea temperature matters

Cold water can trigger an involuntary gasp and rapid breathing. It also reduces swimming ability over time. Wind after leaving the water can accelerate cooling, which is why the plan needs to include changing and warming up—not only the time spent swimming.

What a wetsuit changes

A well-fitting wetsuit helps retain warmth and adds some buoyancy, but it does not prevent cold-water shock or make rough conditions safe. Thickness and style depend on the activity, season, fit and how long you expect to be in the water.

Acclimatisation is personal

Enter gradually, allow breathing to settle and keep early sessions short. Do not copy another swimmer’s time or clothing. Your response can change with fatigue, illness, food, sleep and weather.

Plan the exit before entering

  • Know exactly where you will get out if the session is shortened.
  • Keep warm layers and a drink ready.
  • Swim with someone and remain visible.
  • Stay close enough to exit before cold affects coordination.
  • Leave the water immediately if you feel unwell, confused, unusually tired or unable to control your breathing.
